The Friend of God - (part 2 of 3)

The sign of the Friend of God is that he has these three qualities:
a generosity like that of the ocean,
a compassion like that of the sun,
and a humility like that of the earth.

-Bayazid in 'Attar, "Tadhkirat" '

A compassion like that of the sun.

What is compassion? Com="with", "passion"= feeling - but more than than: Beyond symphathy, compassion bathes us in a wave of understanding.

The Sun, a source that illuminates and guides us, whose inner power we cannot totally know.

What would it mean to have a compassion like that of the sun?
Light, intense and penetrating - piercing and illuminating everything it encounters? And beyond that: a spectrum of light that is as complete as any we know.
Ask any astronomer, any scientist - LIGHT is one of the forces that defines the universe...

Light shows all. It continues upon its path direct or reflected, bouncing off obstacles. Light shows, light illuminates: light is.

If the Friend of God has compassion like that of the sun, his or her aura extends illumination and warmth to all - the wicked and the righteous; the just and the unjust; and as simply and truly as the light of the sun shines upon us all.

The smile and stance of the friend of God are unmistakable.

This is the choice each of us have:

to reflect the light of the Sun:

to see it all and love it anyway; or,

to slip away in a life less honorable.

Compassion like that of the sun. A sign of the Friend of God.
